The general opinions are:

Its basically not possible on a ufs system, use AdvFS
if this ability is required. However there is a utility at:

ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/sysadm/recover.tar.Z

Which may be able to trace remnants of files so long as the
disk has not been written to. Tom Payerle kindly sent me
the tarball as an attachment, so I'll be playing with that.

One or two helpful replicants suggested I recover the
data from my backups %-)
