Summary: DE500 problems

Hello,

My original question is below.

It seems that there is some problems with the DE500 cards on the DS20s and
ES40s and the cisco 6500 are not completely blameless in this issue.

I received a number of responses from individual indicating a problem.

I would like to thank all that replied. All advise was appreciated.

What we have found that going to DE600 cards do solve the problem but the
cards have to be set to auto-negotiate.

Below are the response we received that saw a similar problem.

I've had really bad performance from DE500's and occasional disconnection
when used in DS20E's and also some 8400 machines. This was also in a Cisco
switched LAN environment, mostly Cat 5000's. The initial workaround was to
set the operating mode to "Fast" at the console instead of Auto-negotiate -
the disconnections went away but the poor performance remained - nothing
like Fast. Setting to "Twisted-pair" gave the same throughput.

The solution was to swap them out for DE600s at which point the performance
increased dramatically and no problems since.

This is actually a CISCO issue. The 6500 model is
defective and extremely picky about NIC's. Even here
at Sun, we try to avoid that model since it does not
work with our equipment either.

We've got DS10s and ES40s with the exact same problem. We initially saw
the
problem on our Cisco 6500 switch, but the problem follows the DE500 as
we've
plugged it into 2 different Cisco 3548 switches as well. We've been
troubleshooting this for around 6 weeks.

If I run a netstat -i on a troubled machine I see output errors on the tu*
interface.

On the switch I see carrier sense errors, and messages that the host left
and joined the brige port.

Earlier DE500-AA were working but had a problem with auto link loss
detection and auto speed determination.

You should use DE500-BA if possible.

I don't have an answer for you but I may have a place to look for the
     answer.

We had similar problems here but involving a different card and the
problem was eventually tracked to the ARP table on the router/switch.

It may be worthwhile to find out how often they refresh the ARP cache
and see if it in any way matches up with the problems you have had.

Our symptoms were an occasional loss of connectivity that could be
restored by flushing the ARP table and refreshing the ARP cache.
Unfortunately I left it in the lap of the network people and didn't
actively participate in what they did to eventually resolve the
     problem.

Orginal Question

We've had problems with the DE500 network cards in DS20's and ES40's. The
system will lose network connectivity. The system will not show any data
errors though.

If you remove the ethernet cable from the DE500 jack and plug it back in
you regain network connectivity.

We've called Compaq about this issue and the said it was a CISCO problem.
The local LAN team says that it is a system problem, (traditional finger
pointing).

All connections seem to be connected to one of several CISCO 6500.
The problem doesn't occur very often, it seems to happen about
once-a-month.

Has anyone seen this problem or something similar?
