The general consensus is that although this could be done, it would
be a very bad idea and certainly isn't worth it just to save a couple
of megabytes. Among other things it would screw up kernel debugging.
Duh! Why didn't I think of that before posting?

So I guess it does win dumb-question-of-the-week after all.
