Tru64 Managers,

I'm in the early stages of setting up a new server to replace our old
machine to run our Internet services (login authentication & account
management, mail, DNS, and some freebie web-hosting). Equipment & software
details are listed below.

The old machine currently boots from an external hard drive, and that's
where all data is stored. My plan is to incorporate the RAID array as the
primary boot disk & data storage location for the new machine. When that's
done, I plan to upgrade the old machine to version 5 for backup & patch
testing, and eventually incorporate TruCluster.

Old (currently running) machine:
  Third-party (Aspen Systems) AlphaPC 164LX (533 MHz) processor, 1GB
memory, almost 3 yrs. old).
  System disk: 18GB external SCSI
Operating System: Tru64 4.0F (no patches installed)
  File System: UFS

New machine:
  Compaq DS20 EV67 (667 MHz) processor, 1GB memory
  System disk: 18GB internal SCSI
  Operating System: Tru64 5.0A
  File System: AdvFS

RAID (just upgraded--all new disks, new controller):
  Infortrend 3102 Ultra2-to-Ultra2 3-channel SCSI version 2.23, RAID level 5.
  4 18GB hard drives (will probably use 3 + 1 hot-swappable disk) in a
7-bay RoadRunner cabinet from Aspen Systems.

Other info:
-I do have an additional external 18GB SCSI hard drive that could be put
to use (currently connected to the old server, storing backup data).
-Our user base is approximately 5000 dialups and growing.

My questions for now:
  1. Would you recommend keeping AdvFS on the new machine, or changing to
UFS for use as an Internet server? From what I've read, AdvFS is not good
for a lot of small files, as you'd find in a mail server, and that's why
I'm wondering.

  2. What steps would you recommend taking to get the account information
and other necessary files copied to the RAID drives, given the differences
in operating systems and--if a change to UFS is not recommended--the
differences in file systems?

Thank you very much for any input you can provide.
