Hello UNIX managers,
I received another reply to my question, from Dr. Tom Blinn, who
confirms the advice from other respondents:
«
TPB:You have two choices:
TPB:
TPB:1) Fix your applications. They are broken. Make them at least 64
bit
TPB:safe.
TPB:
TPB:2) Get full product sources (these are not available) and rebuild
the
TPB:entire product to work with a smaller PID value (not likely that you
TPB:would succeed, and the end result would be unsupported).
TPB:
TPB:In other words, live with it.

Tests with the version of top provided on the Open Source Software
Collection CD bundled with TU5.0A shows that even this version also has
problems with long PID numbers. Problems are not only cosmetic: I found
that renicing a process with a long (i.e. > 5 digits) to a positive
value (0 included) from an initial negative value leads to an error
message like "NNNNNN: invalid argument", where NNNNNN is the PID you
tried to renice. There may also be other functionality broken by long
PID numbers.
So the question now is: has anyone seen a version of top fitted for
long PID numbers?
