SUMMARY: TCP throughput problems

Thanks to Dennis Breeden, Joe Ryals, George Gallen, Joseph Thvedt, Selden Ball
and Stuart Whitby for their replies.

Several responses suggested getting hold of a DE500 card on the secondhand
market, e.g. through www.compurex.com (George Gallen). I have now located a
local supplier of DE500-BA's and may yet decide to do that upgrade.

Both Selden Ball and Joseph Thvedt suspected autonegotiation problems with
the switch. In Joseph's words,
"I've seen several situations where auto-detect
appeared to be making the correct choices, yet wasn't really working."
Stuart Whitby suspected deeper hardware problems. He may well be right, as
(1) I have other reasons to doubt the health of that switch, and
(2) buying and installing a new switch (same manufacturer, D-Link) seems
to have cured the problem.

I had been hoping that someone would shed some light on sysconfig options
to tune the network stack (after perusing the manuals in vain). No one did,
and that in itself is instructive.
