Backup solutions for remote system drives

Hi Admins,
Not a problem this time, but some advice/solutions required.
I am running a bunch of Tru64 boxes (version 4.0D-4.0F) in a server room on
the other side of the campus of our uni. These machines are all backed up,
using Amanda software, to a machine with a DLT drive in a different server
room on the opposite side of the campus.
The backups work fine and restores work fine, however, (this is where I'm
after the advice) if a system disk crashes, I can't restore the disk without
first recreating a basic system with a network from the installation CD or
carrying the DLT down to the other server room (these things weigh a ton!).
So, my intention is to cut a CD of the system disk on each of the systems,
that can be used to restore the system to a certain point whereby the tape
backup can then be used to bring the machine up to date.
Is anyone currently doing this, or something similar, that wouldn't mind
sharing their ideas and the names of providers of software and hardware that
can accomplish this?
I will summarise any info received.

Regards, John.
