Sound Support

Greetings,

Some months ago I began work on writing a sound card
driver for Tru64 so that people like me who have a
cloned alpha can have sound. I have some news in
regards to the entire sound issue. First off, I'm
trying to port NetBSD's sound system to Tru64, which
is going slowly. I almost have a working sound blaster
16. It does not work with any applications except for
some test apps that I've written. So it's a bit off
from being useful at this point. Now for the fun
part.. I found out that MME version 3.0 has a lot of
new changes. The first one being the fact that all of
the video support from it has been removed. The second
big change is the addition of the SDK for the MME
package. If you are running Tru64 5.1, you don't need
a license for the development packages. This is great
in the sense that porting sound apps will be easier.
The last interesting addition is support for a
Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card. This is pretty
cool, except that you need to have an exact version
for it to work. I found this out today after venturing
to Fry's and buying one. I got home and tried to get
it to work, and basicly I have a newer revision.. so
the MME driver does not know what to do. I tried to
edit the sysconfigtab to see the controller chip, and
that is about as far I can get with it. So if any of
you happen to know how I can get my hands on an
Ensoniq AudioPCI card that has a 1373 chipset on it,
let me know. I'm trying to track down the author of
the driver to see if he can fix the driver to work
with the one I bought. The reason for that being the
fact that the version of the card that I have is the
current one availible from Creative Labs. If that
works out, then I'll focus on porting the OSS support
library from NetBSD. That will make things easier by
having people install an Ensoniq card or use the ESS
card builton to the PWS's.. thusly all I would need to
do is to make the OSS library interface with MME. Well
I hope that I can get in contact with the author of
the new driver or find someone who has one of these
odd ball sound cards to work with. If anyone from the
development team for the MME stuff is watching this
list.. drop me an email.. and for crying out loud..
use a sound card that people can get a hold of
easily:)
