Thanks to the following for offering views and advice on my problem.

The original problem was:

"I have a Digital Personal Workstation 500au with a Mylex controller with an
external shelf of 6 4GB drives. Upon power-on I get a message:

SCSI drive at channel 0, target 0 not responding on dra.0.0.1010.0

This repeats many, many times, then I get the >>> prompt. I can then boot
normally and everything runs fine. The external storage is available and
seems to work fine."

The responses I got are:

1.) Most probably disk with ID 0 is failed in the Raid group Dra0. You need
to replace the faulty disk and rebuild in the raid. Better to replace the
faulty disk as early as possible because the failure of the second disk will
make Dra0 inaccessable.

2.) If the messages are for the same drive (channel, target) see what makes
this drive different. Different type of drive? More drives on that bus
than the others? Something wrong with that bus? Something wrong with the
drive?

3.) Your console firmware apparently believes that the Mylex controller
(which is called a "dra" in the console firmware) is supposed to be
exporting a logical drive as channel 0, target 0, and it's not doing that.
I don't have a Mylex controller in any of my systems, so I've not had to
deal with this ever myself (all thanks to the powers that be for that
circumstance), but there are management utilities you can use to configure
the Mylex controller. Make sure that it's not telling the console firmware
that it has, for instance, a "JBOD" at that address, especially if the disk
isn't actually working.

In other words, your Mylex controller is probably misconfigured.

Thanks to all for the reponses. So far nothing has worked out, so send any
additional thoughts you might have.

Regards,
