Thanks to the following for bits of advice:
Nikola Milutinovic
Dr. Tom Blinn
Dan Harrington,
and many thanks to Mohan (from another mailing list, axp-list_at_redhat.com) for
providing the solution.
The original problem was that on an ES40 I couldn't get to the "internal
system COM1 port" through the DB9 "modem" connector in any of the bypass
modes of the ES40's RMC. According to the manual, in bypass modes the
internal port and the modem port are supposed to be connected directly.
As Mohan explained,
There is a jumper setting on the motherboard to use
the COM1/serial port. It looks like it is disabled
in your case. If you have the service manual or
owners guide of the es40, it is explained in there.'
I ran into the same problem, few months ago in one
of the es40's. Generally they are jumpered to let
COM1 be used as serial console, but some of them seems
to have been shipped with it disabled
This jumper happened to be J31, which is not documented in the Owner's
Guide. However, according to the Guide, the default position for J31 is
2-3, while the system was shipped with J31 in 1-2. Setting J31 to
default solved my problem.
Other suggestions/opinions were:
- to make sure the SRM variable "console" is set to "graphics"
- it might be a cabling or firmware problem
- COM1 is unusable for regular modems, which may have to be switched to
a "dumb" mode and connected using a special cable in order to work on
COM1.

Nikita
