Hi, question: I'm running tru64 v.4.0F on an Alpha ES40. A copule of weeks ago, we tried to add 5 disks to an existing AdvFS file domain using the addvol command. It seemed to work fine, until we tried to Balance the domain (using the balance command). Three of the disks were running just fine, but the other two were staying at 0%. Then we noticed that the size of the two disks using the showfdmn were the completely wrong size (about three times as large as they should have been). Oh, and then the system freaked out and halted itself. We called Compaq and they mentioned a few things (mostly getting stuck on the fact that we don't have the most recent patches installed). Don't worry, I'm not looking for an answer to this problem. I'm just wondering if the balance command is necessary. I realize that it distributes the files amongst the drives nicely, and probably gives a performance boost, but other than that, is it actually necessary? I would think that even if one of the disks went up to 100%, that would be fine, and then it would start writing to the other disks. Also, if it is necessary to balance, would you think you should balance after each disk you add, or just balance once after you add all the disks. Thank you in advance.
