Ok, I've only received a few responses, but they all say pretty much the same thing:
Balance is only necessary for possible performance benefits. More than one person also said that if you do decide to "balance", only one balance after all volumes are added is necessary. Thanks go to William Bochnik and Dr. Tom Blinn.
Also, Peter Stern recommends using "degfragcron" regularly, as this in itself will do a pretty good job of balancing, as well as the usual benefits of defragmenting.
