Thanks to all who replied.
I have included Dr Tom Blinn's reply for interest.
The problem was solved by using the emxmgr to change the Target ID (TID) of
the fiber controllers (emx0 & emx1) in the machine. For some reason when
installed the cards got ID 12 and 13 which are out of range. we assumed (
incorrectly) that the Hitachi disks were giving these "out of range" TID's.
I did not occur to us that a card supplied by compaq for a compaq server
would assign itself or take a default that was "out of range".
We presume that when we moved to ASE the AM needed to do a "scsi ping" to
the fiber controller.
The Hitachi disks now work brilliantly - if anyone else wants to do this we
are happy to help via the list!
Rowan.
