Hi,
Here is a belated summary that was actually stimulated by Allen Belk's
recent posting titled "Documentation on kernel parameters". The responses
that I received will probably overlap with the advice he gets! Sorry...
A good place to start for the question I had is here...

You can go to the documentation for your particular OS version. As Thierry
Chich notes below, the System Config & Tuning guide for 5.0A has some
pretty specific info that has been helpful.
================== original question ====================
An application we run in our lab requires certain system parameters to be
increased. In the "old days" before I learned about sysconfig and
sysconfigdb, we would "hardwire" these parameters into the configuration
file and generate a new system with the doconfig command. In that method,
we would set a parameter called taskmax, and all was well. It looks like
the corresponding parameter under the "sysconfig method" is task-max.
Under V4.0F (on a DS-20), "sysconfig -q proc task-max" returns the current
value. However, under V5.0A (on an XP1000), this same command returns an
error -- unknown attribute. Can I assume that under 5.0A task-max is no
longer valid or needed? Is there some other parameter that I should set
that would effectively accomplish the same thing -- perhaps in an indirect
way.
==================== the replies =======================
My thanks to these three folks who responded...

Many tuning parameters changed name from V4 to V5. Many
went away, probably because the system can grow the
data structures dynamically as needed. It is unfortunate
that these changes don't seem to be documented anywhere,
but by comparing appropriate sections of the Tuning Guide,
you may be able divine what changed.
Many of the differences from V4 to V5 went undocumented or
were poorly documented. If you have a service contract
for the operating system, a complaint to be forwarded to
the engineering group might prevent it from happening in
the future. E-mail sent to the documentation group might
also help.

Try "sysconfig -q proc" and see what attributes are in the play. Also,
you could use dxkerneltuner, a GUI for sysconfig.

...I know that there is dxkerneltuner that is doing the same thing than
sysconfig in a easier way.
Secondly, there is a detailed documentation about the tuning of the kernel
here:
