Thanks very much for all the quick responses
received.
Arguments seems to leaning on upgrade over install. Of
the responses, about 80% outright suggested upgrade
option over fresh install (For the ease of it).
Different path approaches which have been taken
successfully:
4d > 5.0 > 5.0A
4d > 4f > 5.0 > 5.0a > 5.1
4d > 5.0 > 5.1
4d > 4f > 4g > 5.1
4d > 4f > 5.1
(Thanks to William Magill, Jim Lola, Carsten Udsen,

Here is the word from Dr. Tom Blinn, regarding
licenses and other interesting issues:
I personally prefer installupdate to fresh install,
but there is one
thing to be said for a fresh install, which is that it
gives you a
clean slate.
If you are moving to V5.x, you have two choices: Get
to V4.0F, then
go to V5.0A and from there to V5.1 (which is available
now and is a
lot better in many ways than V5.0A). Or, you can get
to V4.0F, then
go to V4.0G (a relatively safe upgrade) and from V4.0G
to V5.1. We
will retire support for V4.0F in favor of V4.0G for
the V4.0x stream,
and we will retire V5.0A in favor of V5.1 before we
retire support
for V4.0G. So that's where you want to go.
Also, officially, to go from V4.0F to V4.0G is "no
update license",
to go from V4.0F to V5.0A you are supposed to buy an
update license,
and from V5.0A to V5.1 you are supposed to buy ANOTHER
update license
so depending on your timing, it may be CHEAPER to go
up to V4.0G and
then go to V5.1 from there.
