Restarting nfsd/nfsiod daemons

Hi, what is the recommended way to change the number of threads of these
daemons on a running system without risks for the users?
Simply /sbin/init.d/nfs stop and start or what?

I changed the values of NUM_TCPD and NUM_UDPD to 16 on the server and
NUM_NFSIOD to 15 on the clients in /etc/rc.config.
