NO NO NO, Ultra3 is backward compatible with Ultra2 and Ultra. It is
designed that way.
I would have stayed with Ultra3 {160 Mbit/s}. Your problem was, SCSI
controller, Cables, Terminators, Firmware, Differential SCSI, etc. Why
replace drives when you could have replaced the card.
Ultra2 is only 80 Mbit/s. You just lost about half burst trough put.
Anyway, AFAIK Ultra2 drives are not manufactured any more {Well I cant get
any stock, all are Ultra3}. So you just got new hardware {Old stock} that
can only be replaced by Ultra3.
All our drives are Ultra3 on HSG80/Drive Cage that is Ultra2 only and no
problems. In future I just upgrade the drive cage.
Hope it helps.

Well it turns out the whole problem resulted from our reseller putting the
wrong scsi card in our server. The drives were Ultra3, but the card was
Ultra2. I replaced the drives with Ultra2 ones, and everything installs
fine now.

Subject: Firmaware for 5.1 on a 20E
Hello,
I have a 20E with the new 667Mhz cpu's in it. I am trying to install 5.1
but coming up with some errors that look to be firmware related. Here is
results from a show config.
COMPAQ AlphaServer DS20E 666 MHz
SRM Console: V5.8-10
PALcode: OpenVMS PALcode V1.84-65, Tru64 UNIX PALcode V1.79-63

Notice that I have 5.8-10 which came with 5.1. When I go to the website to
try and download the latest firmware for a 20E I see that 5.8-10 is the
latest, but the system complains about it when I boot up..
** This system is currently running firmware revision: 5.8-10
See the "Installation Guide" for more information about
updating firmware.

I tried a different distribution CD on another 20E I have sitting around,
and both 5.1 cd's I have check out fine on that one. The only difference is
the other 20 is a 500Mhz model.
Ideas?
