Thanaks for the fast answer. I got only one answer from Mr.Thomas P.
Blinn. So I have given up
the replacement with the AlphaStation machines. The answer from Mr.Blinn :
If you get a supported high-voltage differential SCSI adapter for the
AlphaStation 600 5/333 systems (this will be a challenge, since those
are no longer marketed systems and were typically not configured with
HVD interfaces), then you SHOULD be able to install the equivalent
system software (once you have the right licenses) and configure the
new systems to use the same TCP/IP addresses as the old systems. Be
aware, however, that the old HSZ40 is no longer a supported option,
and if you have problems configuring it, you may not be able to get
patches, etc. And your local Compaq support people may be unable to
help you.
To summarize, performance is NOT likely to be a problem, but getting
the right hardware and system software may be a big challenge.
My Question was:
===============
We are using 2 DEC3000-800 machines as File Server. These machines are
connected with Differential
SCSI cards and HSZ40 controller to a Disk Array configured with Raid 5
and conatins more than 400GB.
ASE SW is installed on theses File Servers. Now we wants to replace
these servers with 2
AlphaStation 600 5/333 machines.
Users are not logging on these servers. We use NIS at our place. The
user home directories are on this
server and are exported to other machines via NIS. I would likre to
know
1. Whether can I use AlphaStation 600 5/333 as a File Server(Any
performance problem?Can I connect
the Differential scsi cards on this machine etc.?)
2. If possible what is the simplest way of configuring the new server?
We want to use the same TCP/IP
address and name.

Kumar
