DLT storage

Hi all,

I'm performing a backup on a Tru64 4.0F machine (AS1200) (using vdump -0uf)
The device is a (original digital TZ89) DLT device. Using Maxell DLT IV
tapes with a native capacity of 40 GB I a problem.

I thought this DLT device uses data compression by default, so I should be
able to store about 80 GB of data on 1 tape.
Vdump, though, wants me to change tapes while the 7th filesystem is being
backupped; at that moment there has been about 55 GB written to tape.

Starting the dump on one filesystem, vdump gives as output:
vdump: Dumping 225572715 bytes, 447 directories, 3300 files
55 GB is the total of the bytes-to-be-dumped from all 7 filesystems.

Any ideas what might be causing this (tape)storage problem? Hints about how
to verify the (data)compression to tape?

TiA,
Alex Harkema
