ftp/login still a problem

Hi Group,

I received lots of suggestions at last posting to check /etc/shells, /etc/ftpusers file. The users shell is listed in
/etc/shells file.
The users are not listed in /etc/ftpusers file. I have re-installed tcp_wrappers. I have narrowed my problem
to /usr/sbin/ftpd.

My new question : has anyone seen this error message
530 Login incorrect
Login Failed
Remote system type is UNKNOWN

then I am logged out...........I am able to telnet, enter username/passwd logged in fine!

These users are located outside of a firewall. They have a firewall of there own as well.

When I put an old ftpd in /usr/sbin, I can log in fine ( inside firewall), but users outside firewall
still receive 220 ******************** then are timed out.

This is now a problem on two systems.

Any other clues would be appreciated.

TIA
