Original question
I've recently upgraded from 4.0D to 5.0A via 4.0F on an
Alphaserver 4000. I now find that for any newly created accounts
the ls -l command show numeric values for UID and GID, instead
of names. This is for any directory the user may list. Accounts
created before then show names for these values as usual. This is
a "standalone" system and we aren't using anything like NIS.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Well I've finally worked it out (I think). It seems that
/etc/sia/matrix.conf wasn't world readable. Making it so seems to solve
the problem. I'll now check with Compaq that this is a supported
solution.
While I'm at it, thanks to another two respondees Olle Eriksson and
William H Magill.
