Compiling MySQL on 4.0F

After a recent upgrade of our 1000A 5/400 from 4.0E to 4.0F I found some
weird issues with mysqld and tried to compile from source the whole thing.

Now I have looked through the list and tried a number of the compiler flag
options suggested by other mysql compile attempts but to no avail.

Has someone been able to get mysql-3.23.32 to compile on 4.0F?

I'm kinda hesitating to go to 5.X just yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
