Hello,
I am unable to get any graphics ouput on an AlphaServer 1200/Ultimate
Personal Workstation with a PowerStorm 350 video card when the SRM variable
os_type is set to unix. When os_type is set to NT, the vga AlphaBIOS comes
up as normal. Also at the SRM prompt, 'vga reinit' appears to have no
effect, it pauses for ~60 seconds before returning. The card is new to the
system.
I am hoping to replace the old tga card with the new one due to the poor
capabilities of the tga adapter.
I have included all system/SRM info I think may be relevant. If someone
would like more information please email me.
Troubleshooting summary:
1. system was initially on firmware version 5.8
2. os_type = unix, console = graphics
3. setting pci_parity to ON/OFF does not appear to help.
4. I have upgraded the firmware to 5.9, no effect
5. I have run the ECU (1.11A), numerous times, no effect.
6. The system (SRM) does correctly identify the card as a "PowerStorm 350"
7. the card/system is able to display the graphical AlphaBIOS environment.
8. I have tried removing all other PCI cards in case there was a resource
sharing/contention problem, no effect
9. when booting install_vga_console fails. The kernel DOES correctly
identify the card after installing 3X0520A software kit.
10. SRM>>> vga reinit has no effect, hangs for ~60 seconds, no output back
to SRM prompt
11. when SRM is initializing, system hangs at "Graphics Init" for ~60
seconds.
12. I have tried the card in several PCI slots on bus0. Card is currently
installed in bus0, slot2
13. I have verified the VGA ENABLE jumper is shorted on the card.
When set to DISABLE, the system does not pause ~60 seconds during SRM
init.
14. the previous video (tga) card works in the same PCI slot.
15. the old card is model# PBXGB-AA, the PowerStorm 350 is model# PBXGD-AE
Questions:
Is there anyway to looking to look/debug what is happening when running 'vga
reinit' ? It does not return anything.
Are there any other SRM variables that I can try? I believe the problem is
with the SRM firmware's vga initialization since the card works when os_type
= nt.
Does anyone know what the other jumpers on the PowerStorm 350 are used for,
there are 5 or 6, which are all currently open. I have been unable to find
any documentation that references them.
