WOW! The response on this list is amazing!!

The verdict on install update paths from 4.0D are these:
4.0D -> 4.0F -> 5.0,5.0A -> 5.1
or
4.0D -> 4.0F -> 4.0G -> 5.1
or
4.0D -> 4.0G -> 5.1

We have chosen to go with the third path for a few reasons:
there would only be 2 upgrades to plan/test/implement
4.0G is more stable than 4.0F
upgrade paths beyond 4 is easier from G than F
5.0A has a reputation of being messy - we can avoid it from G
from 4.0G, we can go directly to the latest 5.x version
4.0G is the terminal version of the 4.x series
so PVS support will be available much longer than for 4.0F
If we decide to go with a full install up to 5.x, we will be at an O/S
version with
continued support for a while - giving us plenty of time to plan.

Keep in mind while upgrading the extra layered products you have installed -
any licensing issues in
upgrading?

On firmware, the concensus is to use the latest available. If your hardware
development stopped at a lower level, it will be included at that lower
level on the latest CD.
