Hi,

I got a lot of quick responses. Thank you very much. The quick
answer is - no the NT systems are not needed and to use what ever you
want. Here is a list of what people are currently using:

                 ConsoleWorks by TecSys Development Inc
(http://www.tditx.com/). This looks like a software front end used for
event tracking. It can connect to the console and allow users to access
the console via a web interface. This seems to be shipping with the
wildfire systems, but that started after I got my GS160s. I am getting a
copy from my reseller.

Terminal Servers with a product called CommandIT from
CA. I don't know anything about this one.

Terminal Servers with a product called KiNetworks CLIM
Software. I don't know anything about this one.

Terminal Servers with a product called RoboMon from Heroix
corporation. I don't know anything about this one.

I got a couple of responses about adding more graphic
cards to the pci buses. However, this does not allow for remote access to
the console which brings up a response about security:

>Not only that, but if the console terminal server is
connected to your
>production network, then the NT boxes as well as the
terminal server
>are security holes big enough to drive a truck through...
If I can get in
>and connect to your console port, I can keep you out,
even if I can't do
>anything -- it's called a denial of service attack.

I am planning on using our existing Lightwave ConsoleServer 3200
(http://www.lightwavecom.com/products/conserver.htm). This system can
connect up to 32 serial console connections via Cat 5 cable. Up to 17
users can connect to this box and use the consoles by modem (1 connection),
telnet or directly connected dumb terms. There are users with passwords
and access restrictions and a 16k FIFO buffer per console port (100 pages
of data). We are currently using them on RS6Ks, Suns, HPs, Ciscos and some
DEC equipment (hsg, hsj controllers, 8200s, 4100s, 2100s, and older stuff).

I got the answer I needed - the NT box is not needed.

         thanks again,

         Paul
