I had the following problem:

within 15 minutes I had three answers, which can be summed up as follows:
3rd party DC 21143 cards have to follow some design criteria in their PHY
media layer and SROM chip, my card doesn't. Upgrade would not help (I'll
check it anyway).
I have two choices: Ugrade to 4.0g (or 4.0f + patches) to get a Intel
EtherExpress PRO 10/100 working or to by a digital Networks DE 500
(Compaq DE 600?).
Just for the records: the manufacturer of the third party Tulip card
mentioned in my question did NOT claim that this card would be Tru64
compliant, so I'm not very surprised that it doesn't work. I just wanted
to check it myself, now I'll plug this card in one of my x86 Linux boxes.
