Thanks all you vigilant managers,

Lots of quick feedback, mainly stating that while 4.0d is being dropped,
4.0g should be around for some time. As I was not sure about notice of
de-support information, I phoned Compaq support and they told me 4.0g would
be supported "for a long time". Not being satisfied with their answer, I
looked on their site and see that in Europe, version 4.0d ends in June this
year, but 4.0g lasts until June 30, 2003.

Some time last year when I attended a Tru64 V5 Migration Seminar
I was told that Compaq planned to maintain both a V4 and a V5
development/support path. This is because V5 has hardware
REQUIREMENTS that many of us running V4 are not capable of
making at this time (or do not wish to). At some time (I would expect
within the next 3 to 5 years) Compaq will "retire" V4 and drop support
for it; but certainly not this year -- especially for V4.0G which is the
current release!

Check the Compaq web pages. I believe you'll find that only V4.0D support
is being dropped at this time. (This is hardly news, by the way.)
Both V4.0F and V4.0G should be safe for another 1+1 years; in fact,
their guaranteed lifespan is no shorter than that of V5.1 (according
to the schedule published by Compaq).

4.0G is the terminal release in the 4.X line, and as such, I'm told it will
be supported for quite some time to come. We've got many 4.0F servers and
have no immediate plans to upgrade.

Contacted Compaq (Digital) a few days ago on a problem with 4.0E.
They told me unless we had "prior version support", that 4.0E was
"unsupported". Here's a direct quote:
"Also note that you need to plan on upgrading your version
of Digital Unix from V4.0E since engineering support has lapsed
for that old release. This means unless you are purchasing prior
version support, any new software bug that is not corrected
by the latest patch kit cannot be escalated to engineering."

Have a look at
http://www5.compaq.com/services/software/ss_mps_pvs_eur.html
(which say support for 4.0F/G until 1 June 2002).
--Sander

This is what is publicly announced for the Americas. Beginning of PVS has
always been the end of standard support in the past. PVS is a for fee
contract, basically used to get engineering support on older versions of OS
for a limited time.

If you go back one page you'll see the pointer for Europe, which looks much
the same as the one for the Americas, so it looks like someone was
mistaken...

Visit http://www.unix.digital.com/supported_versions.html every few months.
Compaq changes the end of life for a specific OS version. 4.0G has changed
twice that I have noticed. Currently, 4.0G is supported thru 30 April 2002
as well as 4.0F, 5.0A, and 5.1. Please note the end of life dates can and
do change but so far for the better.
Tell your counterpart that he owes you a free lunch for scaring you. Bad
counterpart. Very bad counterpart. :)

I am certain that 4.0G is the one they are going to support the
longest, according to their support schedules (check the archives, the
link was posted there). I am not having any problems calling up
Galway for CSA support.
--Arrigo

As I just heard from Compaq in the US. They told me that 4.0g will be
supported until Jan 2002. That is 9 months. I have to upgrade to 4.0g
and then next year go to 5.1.
--Ron

Not for a long time -- standard support for 4.0G ends 6/30/02 and prior
version support ends 6/30/03. You can always check our planned
end-of-support
dates on line at:
http://www.compaq.com/services/software/ss_pvs_se_amap.html

or

  (for Europe)

I suspect that your counterpart in England is mistaken and probably has
confused 4.0g with 4.0d. If I remember correctly, it is 4.0d which is due
to be desupported by Compaq. Information about this is probably available
on Compaq's web site if you search there.
--Stan

I won't swear to this, but I'm pretty sure I had checked this on Compaq's
site. I believe 4.0g was going to be supported through Jan 2002.

This only means that after that date, there won't be an engineering work
done on the OS. You could still get questions answered, but they won't
release any more patches etc. I think 4.0d or 4.0e range isn't supported,
but 4.0f and up are for now.
