I got several helpful answers. The suggestions are twofold:

I tried this and at least the monitor is now recognized and I can run an
X session. A minor annoyance is that when you reboot the machine, the
graphics console does not come up by itself --- it has to be power cycled.
(b) from Zhiping.Hu_at_compaq.com and a couple of others:

I do not have this CD handy (today is a holiday here) so I decided
to go with (a).
