how to add a tape device

I have a 2100A running 5.0A. I plugged a TZ88 tape device onto the
external SCSI port and rebooted. I can see the device MKB500 from the
console and it is listed as a TZ88. When I boot into 5.0A it creates
the device special files:

/var/adm/syslog.dated/current# ls /dev/tape
tape0 tape0_d0 tape0_d1 tape0_d2 tape0_d3 tape0_d4 tape0_d5 tape0_d6 tape0_d7 tape0c

but this fails:

/var/adm/syslog.dated/current# mt -f /dev/tape/tape0c status
/dev/tape/tape0c: No such device or address

as does this:

/var/adm/syslog.dated/current# mt status
/dev/ntape/tape0_d1: No such device or address

Do I have to do something else to make the tape device usable?
