Dear Managers,
I've a 4.0d AlphaStation 500/333 which used to work quite fine.
By mistake the vmunix file from root area got moved to an user
area. After that it was also working till the machine got rebooted
today. Now it doesn't boot because vmunix is absent. After boot
command it looks for vmunix and doesn't do anything.
I've the digital unix v4.0D CDs and other cds which came with
the machine in 1997. I mounted the cd (Volume 1) and started
rebooting by issuing the command
>>> boot dka400.4.0.9.0
and it takes me to setup mode to upgrade. I don't want to do that
since it'll reformat and I may loose all the files in disks.
I can goto console mode from setup menu. In the /dev area it
doesn't show any disk which belongs to the machine. If I
can mount the machine internal disks then I cancopy the vmunix and
it will boot next time. But I cann't mount any disk.
Please advice how to recover this type of problem and get
the machine back in running.
Thank you very much for your help.
Best regards,
Tapan Nayak
