gigabit ethernet and alphas

We have two GS140s that are on FDDI 100MBt network. We would like to be
able to connect these using gigabit ethernet cards and a crossover cable
for enhanced communication for backups, nfs etc. In other words we want
to create a private network between these two machines. One of the
machines already has a gigabit card installed in it (we inherited this
system). Is this possible? Are there any compaq/other resources that
explain how to do this? Are there any issues we need to watch out for?

These two machines are running different versions of unix but will soon
be upgraded to 5.1. Both of these have 525MHz EV6 processors.

thanks
