We're running Tru64 Unix 4.0D (latest patch kit, I believe) and are having
a strange problem. We're using Powerware UPS' which comes with a software
component called onlinet. It includes a background daemon that is critical
because if the power stays down for X amount of time it can instigate
shutdown procedures.
For reasons unknown to mankind the daemon goes away after running for
awhile. "Awhile" can be defined as 5 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, ....
almost always it's gone within an hour.
Working with Powerware they suggested upgrading to the latest version. We
did. The exact same behavior shows up! I've sent them a core dump as well
as their error log. This sounds like their bug but so far they seem to feel
it's something in our environment. We're running a pretty vanilla system.
There isn't anything running that would go out and kill a process because
it's been idle too long, etc.
Anyone have any experience with onlinet? Any ideas on how I might
troubleshoot this further?
thanks,
Chris
