.sh_history file format

The .sh_history files have lines which commence with one or more funny
characters. These characters are visible in some editors and pagers, and not
in others, e.g. more and vi do not display them but less does.

Text utilities, such as grep, do not give the expected results on this file.

I'm not real sure if this is a Tru64 thing, or a Ksh thing, but I can't see
any mention of it in the man pages or printed manuals.

Where could I find an explanation of what is going on here?
