Hello all,
A few more replies came in since my original sumnmary (below).

John Venier <venier_at_odin.mdacc.tmc.edu> pointed me to:

This is something that warrants a look by just about anybody.
It is an online file format converter - enter the name of a file
in your directory, select what kind it is (ps, html, almost anything)
select what you want it converted to, push button, get conversion.
It is pretty cool!

Daniel Monjar <dam_at_orgtek.com> pointed me to:
    http://www.fiction.net/blong/programs/#rtf
This is a collection of freeware programs including a rtf reader
(I tried a couple of quick runs to get it to Make, but no success)

Richard Loken <tech_at_athabascau.ca> likes the idea proposed by a
few others (including myself) that the rtf senders should be
banished from the Kingdom.

Well, so much for that - back to the real work...

This is a rich text processor for Unix. I think I'll give it a try, but
it is likely to still require some manual intervention.

Other comments ranged from using a PC like the rest of the world, to
writing a script to extract all the rtf notation to essentially
continuing to ignore the d_at_mned rtf messages.

original post:

Hello,
I read and write my mail using my tru64 system. We seem to have a lot
of folks submitting their mail in rich text format. I usually just
ignore them. On occasion I save the message as text, then point
Netscape at the text file so I can read it without having to parse
the message out of the medium.

I was wondering if anybody had a better method of reading the rtf
messages on our Dec systems?

Thanks,
           rich
