I won't repost Dr. Tom Blinn's excellent response as he posted it to the
list. The others I received were:
From: "Lindsey, Pete" <LINDSEYPETE_at_PIOS.com>
I know for sure you will be able to use it fine.
----------------------------------------------------------
From: "Davis, Alan" <Davis_at_tessco.com>
The v4.x advfs metadata will be automajically updated the first time you
mount it on v5.x, there is no conversion program required.
You won't be able to go back to v4.x for those domains, if you see this
as a
possibility make sure you have good, verified backups first.
----------------------------------------------------------
From: "Haesaerts, Corinne" <Corinne.Haesaerts_at_compaq.com>
YES, V5.1 CAN use your existing 4.x partition. However, you will NOT
benefit
from the performance and other changes that were made to AdvFS in V5. To
REALLY benefit from the new features you should create new file domains
&
restore your V4 data into the new V5 domains.
----------------------------------------------------------
I'm not intending to go back to 4--damn the torpedoes, full speed
ahead!--so a one-way convertion to ADVFS v5 is not a biggie. Alan
Davis's reponse conflicts with the two from Compaq, though it would be
nice if true. I'm arranging to 'borrow' some disk space and I will do a
backup/reformat/restore during the process. It'll eat up more of my day
but I think it's probably worth not worrying about using the old
volumes.
