There really is nothing that can be checked at this point, as it happend on
Friday...
The other Admin was attempting to logout someone's hung process, using a
kill -1
when all the telnet sessions were immediatly logged out, and telnet would
not respond
any longer, however LAT logins were fine. At that point a reboot was done to
get
things going again.
Everything appeared fine after that...Then today we noticed that there were
no more
logs into the wtmp file, last didn't have anyone listed since the reboot. I
did copy
/dev/null over the wtmp file, and now the logins are being logged again.
I suspected initially that the admin enter the wrong PID when killing, but
would a -1
do that (this was done as superuser). I ruled out inetd, because a -1 would
only restart
it, and that wouldn't cause all the telnet sessions to be logged out.
I thought about process 1, but all the rest of the system appeared to be
functioning
fine.
Again, it's 4 days later, and after a reboot, so I really can't check
anything. Just curious
what could have happened...we did have plenty of disk space in /usr, so I
wtmp wasn't
too big.
We are running on 3.2c
