Performance Evaluation question

Admins,

If I add up all of the RSS column in a ps axl...would this reflect the memory
usage of my system. I am following a text on performance evaluation and it
claims that by adding up the VSZ column, or Size, you can compare this to your
physcial memory to determine if your low free memory reflects process usage. In
Digital unix it appears that ps reports virtual size including sizes for shared
libraries. So I abandoned that and concentrated on RSS. I have over 280
process reporting 400MB apiece...No way!!!!! I have a 6GB system. Any
takers???
