Thanks to Dr. Blinn for additional information and another solution.

The "erase" command is not implemented for DAT tape drives, only QIC which arent' available for current systems running Tru64.

Suggestion: Use mt weof after an mt rewind. A file set using 1 block will be placed each time you do this to the norewind device. Keep track of how many times you do this to keep your restores correct. This is much faster than the SCU mt erase.
