xhost: unable to open display 5.1

I recently upgraded , clean install, moved some 4.0g *.conf files in place.
All is well except with xhost.
When trying to enable Xclient/Server communications in running xhost + I
get Error:
xhost: unable to open display ":0"

Any Ideas?
