error locking '/etc/fdmns'

Hi all,

I have tried to reboot an Alpha workstation (Tru64 Unix 5.0)in multiuser mod
e, but it reports

mount: error locking '/etc/fdmns'; [13] Permission denied

for each AdvFS file system it tries to mount, and then freezes. When I boot
it to single user mode, the prompt appears, but when I try to issue an

mount -u /

...I get the same 'error locking...' message as above. The /etc/fdmns direct
ory is owned by root:system
and has drwxr-xr-x permissions. The files it contains look the same as the o
nes on an another, identical workstation (that works).

At this point I can not make root fileystem writable, so I can't do ANYTHING
with the workstation as it is. Please help me to get out of this one. ANY ad
vice is appreciated.

Boris
