Thanks to all that replied.

Corinne from Compaq Computer Belgium sent me a pointer to Compaq's best
practices document that I will use as the basis for all my 8.1.7 OPS
installs. I'm going to create a copy of the common oracle home on the second
node after the basic install and see if everything still works. I'll create
a node specific ORACLE_HOME in .profile and set the second instances oratab
entry to the new home.
