Thanks to all who replied...
It is the default behaviour of digital unix (any version) not to
prompt for password before entering the single user mode.
The advantage of this behaviour comes in case of root password
loss...where in you can boot your m/c to the single user mode and then
change your root password.
Anyway, the default behaviour can be changed making it prompt for
password in the single user mode using the foll command.
#/usr/sbin/rcmgr set SECURE_CONSOLE 1
You can run this command in the multiuser mode itself and the next
time you reboot your machine to the single user mode, you will be prompted
for root password.

Subject: Digital unix does not prompt for password when it enters the
sing le user mode
Hi all,
Both my digital unix 4.0D and 4.0F servers do not prompt for
password in the single user mode.
Is this behaviour by default?? If so, how do i make these servers
ask for password before entering the single user mode.

Rekha
