the alpha/intel situation - Compaq employees should read

Hi,

Just out of curiosity, I have yet to see anything in any
article that says hey, we will give you a migration path
from alpha to intel. Someone from Compaq should post to
this group and tell us what is going to happen here. I,
and I imagine others, feel they have been lied to by
Compaq. Now, to here the Chairman and CEO of Compaq talk
about how great the intel chip is and his quote at the
end of:

http://www.compaq.com/newsroom/pr/2001/pr2001062501.html

which says:

'"We will continue to invest aggressively in scale-up and scale-out of
Microsoft technology," Michael Capellas said. "And we will continue to work
closely with Microsoft to drive the next generation of Web services and Web
delivery through Microsoft. NET."'

scares the heck out of me. Do I see VMS or Tru64 on intel chips
in a few years? Really, if I had known this a few months ago
I don't know if I would have recommended that we stay with Compaq.
Especially after seeing this quote above. I get the feeling that
compaq/intel will be supporting ms products in the future and not
other os's such as VMS or Tru64. Maybe Linux will hang in there,
but I even question what support Compaq will give them in the future.

I am really concerned, since we just bought two es40s. What will
be our migration path be in the future? Switch over to windows on
a nice intel processor? I really don't see Compaq supporting Tru64
or any UNIX in the future.

Someone high up in Compaq care to make a statement?

One other notes: How many deals did Compaq just loose by this
announcement? What about the super computer centers that use
alpha lines? Back to our small shop - we don't want to have
to by whole new computers just to upgrade to a faster cpus.
Will we have to do that and by new memory to work with intel
machines, assuming they still support Tru64?

Someone from Compaq really needs to make some official announcements
about supporting a switch over and that it will continue to support
such. It want do any good to say we will support a switch over for
the next 3 years, since some people by servers to last longer than
that before they expect to upgrade.

Please, someone from Compaq make an official announcement here
and on the compaq site. This should have been announced with the
announcement that you were dropping alpha. But, then again, I
already feel like I was lied to by compaq, as I also feel that
the re-sellers we work with were lied to.

Cheers,
Douglas
