Hello!
The original problem was:
After installing t64v50as0003-20010221 onto Tru64 5.0, the disks form an
external "Oxygen" SCSI RAID (actually manufactured by Infortrend with an
Advanced Unibyte Controller in it) were unaccessable. Even trying to just
read the disklabel with "disklabel -r dsk2" or "disklabel -r dsk11" gave an
error message. We then found that individually backing out the
OSFPAT00022500500 patch worked around the problem.
The solutions:
I received one helpful comment from Dr. Thomas Blinn. I don't quote it here,
but the essence is that there was a change in Tru64 which has been
introduced recently that now causes SCSI devices that do not 100% comply to
the SCSI standard, but that previously worked anyhow, to not work any more.
This is consistent with our experience that the Oxygen RAID stopped working,
while a Mylex RAID on the same controller still does work.
Dr. Thomas Blinn said that a customer with support contracts who screams
loud enough would be able to get a fix for the problem (the fix already
exists, but does not yet has made it's way into any openly available
patchkit), but that we who don't have such a contract are currently out of
luck.
In the meantime I have discovered that there are Firmware updates available
for the Oxygen RAID, and so my plan is to upgrade this Firmware the next
time when we bring the machine down. Given that the problem is mit SCSI
standard conformance, there is a chance that the problem might be solved
with such a Firmware upgarde.
As the machine currently is working flawlessly in our workaround mode
(patchkit installed, individual patch that cuased the removed), it might
take weeks or even months until I have the opportunity to test if this
upgarde helps, so I thought I'd post the summary right now and not wait for
that to happen.
Kind Regards,
Tobias Ernst.
