alan _at_ dec.com helped me get my system up and running faster than I can
navigate a tech support phone mail system, with Jay Vlack and Peyton
Bland almost as fast.

Near the power switch is a small rectangluar switch. if pressed while the
machine is booting it will drop into the console promt. from there
boot -fl s to boot into single user mode
mount /usr #(if needed)
mount -u / #to mount / rw
edit the /etc/passwd file to fix the bad shell or do whatever you need
to do

---original question
I was wondering if there was a way to boot an XP100 into single user mode
if root, and no user with sudo or su permissions, can log
in.
/usr/local won't mount, and root's shell seems to be on /usr/local/ (oops)

additional clarification:
the problem was that I didn't know how to get into the console prompt, and
from there I didn't know how to mount / read-write
