Thanks to all who replied. The quick answer is YES the drive will work. A
few people pointed out that Compaq would not give me an answer because of
support issues. I wasn't looking for them to support it, just for the
technical answer. Dr. Tom Blinn suggested contacting Seagate to see if it
would be supported/warranted. Seagate told me it should work fine. Most
replies concerned power/heat issues. Here is a quick rundown on the drive
stats:

18.2GB drive (ST118273W)
Spindle speed: 7200 RPM
Discs/heads: 10/20
Avg access time (read/write): 7.9ms/8.7ms
12V start up: 2.8 amps
12V typical: 0.8 amps (idle)
5V start up: 1.2 amps
5V typical: 0.75 amps (idle)
IDLE watts: 13

181.6GB drive (ST1181677LWV)
Spindle speed: 7200 RPM
Discs/heads: 12/24
Avg seek time (read/write): 7.4ms/8.2ms
12V start up: 0.86 amps
12V typical: 0.83 amps
5V start up: 0.87 amps
5V typical: 0.83 amps
Idle power (typical): 9.95 watts

So, it seems to me the new drive actually requires LESS power and, with the
same speeds, should not produce more heat. Also, there are not drives
directly above or below the new drive. And, just to be safe (since the
warranty was already voided), I had 3 large (2-3 inch diameter) holes
drilled in the brick for extra ventilation/heat dissipation.

Once again, thanks to all who replied.

Subject: Will a Seagate Barracuda 180 work in an AlphaServer 2000

Hi all,

I have an AlphaServer 2000 that is in need of more hard drive space. I have
installed some 18GB Seagate drives (ST118273W) in some old 4GB drive
carriers (Yes, I know I have voided the warranty). I would like to replace
one of those drives with a 180GB Seagate drive (ST1181677LWV). I know I
won't get the full speed of the new drive, but I just need to know if it
will work before we actually buy it. It would connect to the internal shelf
of the server. Has anyone else done something like this yet? I currently
being bounced around the different Compaq departments trying to get an
answer, so I thought I'd check with you guys also.

Thanks, and I'll summarize...
