SUMMARY: Performance on a Alpha 2100a

Thanks to all who replied, I certainly know a lot more about machine now.

Basically the reason that my machine runs Java slowly is because it is a
slow machine. That particular Alpha would be comparable to an Intel
P200-P300. This is consistent to the benchmark results that I achieved.

As an aside, I purchased the 2100a from a company that was closing down, I
got it for very cheap. I intend to use it for learning Tru64 and to do some
development work on it. One of the responses I got back to my original
query suggested that I might want to upgrade the processors. Does any one
know what are the limitations on upgrading the processors on a 2100a? also
Where could I purchase old processors?

Original Query:

Hello
I have a DEC Alpha 2100a 4/275, duel processor with 512MB of memory running
Tru64 V5.1 732. I do not have much knowledge of alpha hardware, so my first
question what would be a comparable Intel based spec?

Secondly, I have run a some test java applications on the system, including
the volano benchmark. The results were very disappointing with the system
running about 4 times slower than a 600Mz(celeron) NT machine with 128MB. I
am using the Compaq fast64 JVM version 1.2.2-8. The rest of the system
performance seems fine for instance compiling samba,CDE,apache etc. Is this
a tuning issue or do I just have a slow machine?

Note: I have "tuned" the machine as according the advice in the tuning your
system as an internet server document.
