My question was about the prospects for recovering data from a
compressed backup after data corruption.
Thanks to Jeffrey_Hummel_at_albemarle.com and alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com.
Both pointed to the -x option of vdump to add an extra level of
data integrity. Alan also made this point:
For what it is worth, a single bit in the wrong place will
corrupt the data just as easily when using hardware compression.
Some tests I've made indicate that the compress option to vdump
won't give me enough compression but either gzip or bzip2 will.
I might try combining the -x option to vdump with the block-size
option of bzip2.
