Hi,
Thanks to Allen and Joe for quick responses.
I have placed an external fan by this system, and this
has brought the temperature down to a reasonable #.
Compaq think it is sensor problem, I will proceed in
their recommended line of action.

Allen,
If the ambient temperature for all the systems is the
same, then likely causes of this one's sensed
temperature being different are:
        o Bad sensor.
        o Higher internal temperature.
An actual higher temperature at the sensor
could be due to the system just being hotter (more
disks, and other components that generate heat), or a
fan not moving the air out.

The system will probably shutdown when the
temperature gets too high. If software does it, there
may be a warning. If the hardware decides, it will be
sudden...
If it is an internal fan, that may be easy to find.
An
external fan (the sort you'd buy at a discount store)
may move enough extra air to keep the
emperature down.

Joe Flecther
Have you checked the status of the fans and the air
paths on the problem machine? FWIW I've known Alphas
to run in machine rooms with failed airco and an
ambient temperature in excess of 45 degrees C. If
you've got
envmon configured to do so it should shut the system
down if your breach the threshold.
