SUMMARY: Loss of graphics/Keyboard/Mouse

This summary has been a long time in coming as the original intermitent
problem I was having with the loss of graphics/keboard/mouse has taken some
time to re-occur. I have consequently only just got arround to testing out
some of the suggestions made by others.

Some reported very similar problems and had not found a solution. Everyone
else suggested I should be able to avoid rebooting by just restarting X. The
common suggestion was to use:
/sbin/init.d/xlogin restart

However this did not work for me. I got an error message saying that X could
not be killed. looking at the processes it was clear that X was grabing 99%
of the CPU cycles. I ended up killing X manually, then I could not restart
(/sbin/init.d/xlogin start) until I had run xsetup(?). Well I avoided
rebooting but I can't say the process was satisfactory. Some suggested (Dr
Blinn) that this is probably a hardware induced problem. However I need the
4D51T card for accelerated OpenGL.

Original question:

I have a DPW500 which is running 5.0A. It is used as a workstation with
myself as the main user - I should also say I use CDE and have a 4D51T
graphics card. Normally if I stay logged in the screen saver will blank out
the screen after so long - moving the mouse of course brings back the
graphics. Now, about every six weeks I will move the mouse to get the
graphics back and nothing will happen. If I power cycle the monitor it will
say there is no signal. There appears to be no response to mouse or keyboard
input. The only way I can get the graphics back is by loging in remotely and
rebooting. This has been going on regularly about every six weeks.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Simon
